We have only a verbal indication that Exeter City Council intends to create a cycle route, lit at night, across the new Summerway Park.  As yet, it does not appear in the Local Plan.  Such a suggestion clearly hasn’t been thought through.

Will ECC act irresponsibly?

There is currently great encouragement for people to cycle rather than use motorised transport for several good reasons. Hence, a network of cycle routes is being established in the City, with assistance from National Government.  So far, so good.  Can we assume, therefore, that when it comes to cycle routes, it’s a case of the more the merrier?  To a Council that seems poor at making distinctions, it probably seems so.  It may appear that all cycle routes reduce the risks to cyclists, but that isn’t true.  Most do, but a cycle route across the new Summerway Park is plainly perilous, not to adults and those with a developed road sense, but to younger children.  Such a route could easily tempt the adventurous but naive towards the dangers of a trunk road - an invitation which it would be irresponsible to give. Two boys, aged 6 and 7, were tragically killed on 25/10/07 crossing the M56 motorway, which they should not have been able to access.  ECC, please take heed!
