Exeter City Council were hoping its unwillingness to consult and its bullying tactics would soon be forgotten after it deprived the children of affordable tennis by demolishing their clubhouse. Members of the Summerway Club are determined this should not happen.  The Council’s application of the Eddie Syndrome, a modus operandi it practises, speaks volumes about its focus.

•  Screw up big time

•  Bully the vulnerable

•  Ignore the consequences

Local Government is supposed to be transparent and open.  In Exeter, it is anything but.  We have been trying for over three years without success to discover the roots of the Council’s deprivation of children in the Mincinglake, Beacon Heath and Summerway areas of the City.

When presented with alternative proposals, the City Council dictated its plans to representatives of the Summerway Club, said that was the way it does things, and claimed that the system cannot be changed.  Is that how democracy works?

With no reasonable justification, City councillors and officers chose to victimise and vilify the Membership Secretary of the Summerway Club, Jim Harle, and arbitrarily deprive him of his democratic privileges.  They preferred that to responding to his apt points and answering his pertinent questions.  This has to be challenged.

Demonstrably untruthful statements on behalf of the Council do not inspire confidence.  Having seen something of what goes on behind the scenes, Jim and the friends working closely with him have no confidence in the City Council’s complaint procedures, the Local Government Ombudsman or the Audit Commission.

There is nothing malicious in the Summerway Campaign’s wish to see equity, openness and democracy thrive in Exeter.  Low turnouts at elections reflect the public’s disenchantment with politicians and the bureaucracy. People have previously despaired of being able to influence governmental decisions that affect their lives, but it seems the mood is changing.  Public opinion is beginning to make a difference.

Having totally ignored our plight for years, the Council is unlikely to behave honourably towards the Club and the City’s youngsters now.  The way forward for us is clearly to contribute our facts to the growing public concern over the failures of ‘The System’ and to shame those responsible for their despicable treatment of our children.

There is power in facts and a knowledge of the truth.  That is why we are advertising in order to increase the number of people who are aware of vitally important issues affecting community.

If you approve of our campaign, please receive our occasional emails.  All you need to do is ....
