Nellie YouTuberances

Nellie’s become one of the Summerway Campaign’s symbols. She was painted on a wall in Gordon’s Place, probably by a member of Heavitree Sculpture Focus Group which was campaigning against the Heavitree Arch on several grounds.

The significance for Summerway is that Exeter City Council claimed it could not afford the historic few hundred pounds a year to maintain the Club’s premises while spending a sum approaching two hundred thousand pounds on controversial street art which included only a minor element of development.  Democratic issues were also involved.

‘Nellie the Elephant’ is a famous song which has a number of versions on YouTube.  Clicking one of the Nellies below will play that selected version in a new window.  To return to this page, simply close the YouTube window.
