The website author does not claim to be have expert knowledge of democracy and its full significance and ramifications. He speaks, therefore, as an ordinary member of the public views the subject.
For democracy to work, the people have to be able to exert some sort of influence over those who govern them. This can occur in one of two ways:
1. If the people have a Choice between the policies of those who govern and represent them. It is the Author’s view, which seems to be shared by a large proportion of the electorate, that the policies of the main Political Parties are so close that no real choice exists. Hence, the widespread view that voting is pointless.
2. If those elected to govern listen to, and consult meaningfully with, the people. As this website clearly demonstrates, this is not happening at local level. The Club has no Voice to which Local Government will listen. It simply ignores and excludes those who dare to express opinions which differ from its own.
If the people have neither Choice nor Voice, how can it be said that we are living in a Democracy?
