The Real Contest

Altruism  v.  Self-Interest

Judges:  Actions, Reality and Consequences

(Words are insubstantial and may be meaningless or deliberately deceptive)

For those who don’t like long words, our campaign is about Givers and Takers.

The Club and its volunteers were clearly Givers.  It could be argued that parents who volunteered their help received benefit to their offspring, but even then they were not doing it for their own personal advantage.  John, Linda and Jim especially gained nothing personally from providing their services to the children, beyond the satisfaction of knowing that they were enhancing community and helping to educate the youngsters. They were in it purely for the sake of others.

Any person or body of people wishing to act as judge, jury and executioner are amongst the Takers.  They are obviously self-centred and in it for themselves.

Characteristically, Givers are low profile, self-sacrificing and do not seek reward for their efforts.  They are content with reality and disdain ostentation.  Their humility is in marked contrast to Takers, who praise themselves, like to be seen in elevated company, and seek publicity to boost their image.

You are welcome to judge for yourself which side Exeter City Council and the Express and Echo are supporting.
