Update 2008 No. 7

Published 30th September 2008

Dear Summerway Friend,

I’m enjoying a sense of freedom, and have had a chance to tackle some outstanding chores and do a bit of plant repotting in the last day or two.  I’ve been working on and off for weeks preparing a Unitary Status submission.  A fortnight ago I scrapped the lot when it wasn’t going well and started all over again.  Long, long stretches spent on the computer as Friday’s deadline crept up, but away it went at the eleventh hour – literally!

•  Unitary Status Submission.  I’m looking forward to seeing how thoroughly the Review Manager of the Boundary Committee examines my lengthy submission.  I will be able to see from my detailed website statistics.  These only give technical info and do not identify website visitors, so I’ve given lots of links to our videos and websites, some of which are specific to the submission.  If a decision is reached and these links have not been accessed, I’ll know the Boundary Committee hasn’t been rigorous in its assessment.  I hope to post the document on the website after it has been examined, or a decision is reached without it.

•  Five News Video.  Our Five News video on YouTube has passed the 2,000 viewings mark.  Our videos remain active, partly because each new Summerway Watcher is extremely likely to watch them as suggested in the welcoming email. (view)

•  Heavitree & District News and the Arch.  Heavitree residents share a strong common interest with us regarding City Council so-called ‘consultation’.  Lucy had the honour of being one of those representing Devon in the LTA Summer County Cup.  As John coached Lucy to Junior National Championships standard entirely at Summerway, which is certainly part of Heavitree & District, I wrote a few details about the County Cup and Lucy’s involvement for the Heavitree & District News. They were not published, so I have posted them on the website.  I will continue to take a supportive interest in the struggle between the residents and Council.  (more)

•  Website News.  Besides the County Cup addition, a navigation page (more) has been created for Summerway Updates, and updates Nos. 5 & 6 have been posted. Also added is a letter of mine published recently in the Express & Echo about ‘Who Runs ECC?’. (more)  The Update Noticeboard has been upgraded with a box link towards the top of the page, and all pages since launch are now included with the dates they were published.  (more)

•  The Summerway Courts.  The City Council did make another attempt in August to provide posts and a net for one of the courts after months of desolation, but local vandals wrecked it pretty quickly.  We understand that a Council worker recovered the net from within the proposed play area at the opposite end of the field and took it away.  We now have a Club net and posts held locally for Summer Sessions.  To save time setting up and packing away, I use a powered hand drill to wind the net up and down!

•  Post Office Closures.  Our local post office near Polsloe Bridge has now closed permanently.  I have been part of many dozens of conversations, and found opposition to the closures to be unanimous and often vehement.  It was very disappointing to discover that our MP, Ben Bradshaw, who has been very supportive of the Club, voted FOR the closures. (motion vote)  It was probably a conflict of interests between supporting the Government and supporting his constituents, with the Government being given the priority.

•  New Domains Registered.  www.summerway.org is now too big to convey its message clearly, so has become a resource.  To promote our cause, we hope to make use of mini websites like our Ivory Tower one.  Accordingly, I have registered another 8 domains with easy to remember names for use later.

Thank you for your continued interest and support, particularly if you have waded through the whole update.  If you’ve also clicked all the links, please ask for a citation!

Warmest regards,

Jim.
