Update 2008 No. 9
Published 2nd December 2008
Dear Summerway Friend,
We’re into December, so now it’s writing cards, energy saving lights in the windows, hanging decorations, Christmas meals out, and all the rest for which there isn’t enough time. This, therefore, is expected to be our last update of the year. I take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Christmas, and hope you survive the preparations in a fit state to enjoy it.
• Why won’t they Publish my Letter? Tired of references to the myth of local democracy, I wrote a letter to the Express & Echo over a week ago. I was told the Editor was unwilling to publish it, and I would be hearing from a reporter. So far, I haven’t. Past bad experience (members will remember!) prompted me to recount the latest dealings and publish the letter on our website. (view letter) Another page was added the following day. (view page) Several possible reasons for the reluctance occur to me, but I am struggling to think of any honourable ones.
• Heavitree Arch. Those in Exeter would probably have seen the E&E front page headline last Friday. We regarded the quoted £70,000 (now adjusted to £73,000) for the Heavitree Folly as an enormity in comparison to the very low cost of less than a grand to keep Summerway Tennis on the road. The true cost of the Arch is £172,000 according to the paper, determined from Freedom of Information documents. I’ve added a comment on the E&E website indicating our Nellie video needs to be upgraded. (view comment) (view video)
• Councils’ Place Survey. The occupants (just us) of our home address were sent three copies of a twelve page survey at intervals before the deadline set for its return. I got the impression someone was eager for a reply. The survey was a combined effort by Devon County Council and Exeter City Council, administered by Marketing Means of Newton Abbot. All being well, I’ll say a bit more about this in the new year.
• Dorothy Harley. Jenny and I were privileged to attend Dorothy’s funeral. The Service at the Crematorium was dignified and appropriate, with John giving a moving eulogy on behalf of the family. Blooms of Pinhoe Road did us proud with the flowers, creating a beautiful posy from the Club in Green & White. I photographed the flowers, so just ask if you would like an emailed digital photo (2.35MB) of the Club’s tribute. Please remember Ray especially, who must find the family home a bit empty without Dorothy.
• Unitary Status. The Boundary Committee has acknowledged that my submission was received before the deadline, but had not yet examined it when I checked my website statistics again last night.
Update No.8 has been duly posted on the website. There’s a great deal ongoing and on the Summerway Campaign agenda. What I am discovering is fascinating, but also very disconcerting, perhaps even alarming. I look forward to being in touch with you again early in the Happy New Year, which I hope will bring you rich showers of blessings.
Warmest regards,
Jim.
